How do propane refrigerators work?

You might be thinking what the purpose of propane refrigerators is? These fridges are not used in your home, they are designed to be used where there is no access to electricity. Some of the places that this type of refrigeration comes in handy includes recreational vehicles (RV) and cabins, and other isolated areas.

how do they work?

The propane is used to produce the cold inside the refrigerator the same as an electrical refrigerator would. The system use to create the cold is called "Continuous Absorption". Propane refrigerator models have no moving parts unlike their electric counterparts.

The parts to a propane unit is as follows:

  1. condenser - the condenser is designed to cool ammonia gas and condense it to create liquid ammonia
  2. evaporator - the evaporator creates the coldness that is necessary for the fridge by evaporating liquid ammonia.
  3. generator - this is to create the ammonia gas
  4. absorber - absorbs the ammonia gas in water.

the process

  • The generator is heated up by the propane gas
  • The generator contains a mixture of liquid ammonia, as well as water that is heated by the propane.
  • As the ammonia/water mixture boils it then goes into the separator where the water ands ammonia separate from one another.
  • The next step is for the ammonia to move into the condenser where it then turns into a liquid.
  • then it goes into the evaporator, then the liquid ammonia is mixed together with hydrogen, which makes it evaporate, this in return creates the cold temperature to cool your fridge.

safety tips

Already own a propane fridge, then follow the energy saving guidelines to keep money in your pocket. Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and away from any type of heat sources. Always use read the owners manual prior to using it.
