The Philco Corporation had a long-standing history in the electronics industry in Philadelphia and sold its first TV set in 1948. Afterwards, the company began to grow and had begun selling the Philco refrigerator and air conditioners amongst other electronics.
In 1954, Philco bought out Bendix & Crosley to boost its refrigerator business and was one of the best selling refrigerator manufacturers on the market. But by 1960, Philco's earnings had fallen to $2.3 million from $335 million. In 1961, the Ford Motor Co. bought Philco, eventually turning it into a wholly owned subsidiary known as the Philco Ford Corp. and then sold Philco to GTE-Sylvania in 1974.
Both Sylvania and Philco eventually became part of Philips Consumer Electronics Corporation. Philco International Corporation, which has, since become a producer of home appliances for the export market, continues today as part of the Nordyne Corporation.
It is very difficult to find vintage Philco fridge's but the best place to start would be by surfing the net and doing a google search. In 1949, Philco came out with a new advanced design that was revolutionary for it's time as well as the 1953 Philco V-Handle Refrigerator that was cool and stylish in both beige and bright red.
