Some tips on refrigerator troubleshooting

Refrigerators are the most dependable of all large appliances .On occasions when they fail to do the job results can be disastrous .So it's advisable to have a rough idea about the trouble shooting tips.

  1. A refrigerator needs electricity to operate so if the light doesn't work or if it doesn't cool at all or its motor doesn't run then check the power .The problem is often with the basic electric controls.

  2. If the refrigerator's light works and you can hear it run but cools poorly then there could be a passage block between the freezer and the refrigerator compartments .Make sure that the airflow is not restricted.

  3. It is important to clean the condenser coils at least twice a year .This can avoid a lot of chaos.

  4. If a refrigerator freezes its contents even if the cold control is set than its probable defective, then it's advisable to call for service.

  5. If the icemaker keeps making ice even when full than empty the bin, remove the icemaker clean it and reinstall it.

  6. Check if the refrigerator light stays on even when the door is closed ,you can check this when the door is a fraction of an inch from closing .If yes , then its advisable to change the bulb because if the interiors are hot it reduces the efficiency of the unit.

  7. If the refrigerator rates or leaks it could be because of loose parts such as the compressor or condenser. Look for any parts that is loose .remove the bottom trim piece by lifting it off of its support and adjust accordingly .If the problem persists then it's advisable to call for servicing.

  8. If the ice maker doesn't make ice, then the water's route is blocked .The icemaker receives water through a small 1/4inch water –supply line than runs from the refrigerator to a water pipe .Check for blockage.

  9. If the refrigerator side gets warmer and the freezer is still cold then there could be a defective defrost ,thermostat defective ,airflow blocked from freezer compartment ,fan blade been broken ,defective fan motor.

If the refrigerator sweats around the edges then there could be a leak in the gasket or could be a defective case heater. If the door doesn't close well [you can check this by inserting a paper and pulling it out, if it comes out easily than its defective] you would need to reform the door gasket –door or replace it. Check the fan motor in the freezer and the condenser is running .If not check the door switch. When putting freshly washed vegetables into the fridge dry them before hand because the moisture can make the appliance use more energy. If you need to transport the refrigerator than you can lay it on its side that is the hinges should be at the top so that the doors don't open .After which the fridge should be made to stand upright at least an hour before it could be plugged in for  the oil to settle back into the compressor. Frequently clean the door gaskets and the refrigerators surface to avoid malfunctioning.

The above mentioned are few tips on trouble shooting .If the problem persists its advisable to call the technician rather than handling it  yourself and getting worse .This would reduce the job of the technician and the cost as well.
