Tips for using Refrigerators

  • A refrigerator must be located away from the sunlight because in a warm area it consumes more energy.
  • More the refrigerator out of the wall and allow one inch space on each side of the refrigerator to allow free flow of air .If the air is blocked than again the energy performance is dropped.
  • Hot food should not be placed in the refrigerator because it increases the energy level again. Allow it to cool.
  • The door of the refrigerator or freezer should be opened only as long as it is needed.
  • The food in the refrigerator must be covered or sealed to prevent them from drying out.
  • It's advisable to maintain the temperature between 37 and 40 degrees and freeze between 0 and 5 degree.
  • Leakage of cold air wastes energy. So its advisable to test the doors .This can be done by placing a piece of paper in the door. Close the door and try to remove the paper .If it comes of easily than its advisable to check the doors.
  • Since paper acts as an insulator and consumes more energy heavy wrapping paper should be removed before storing.
  • The refrigerator should not be overcrowded as its hinders air circulation and reduces the cooling.
  • The freezer can be filled at least 2/3 of its capacity since an empty freezer would require the same energy.
  • The coils should be cleaned in regular intervals roughly once every six months .Some of the new refrigerators do not require cleaning unless the environment is dusty.
  • The refrigerator should be leveled for maximizing the efficiency.
  • If you are going out on a short vacation then there is no need to change the settings .However if it's a long vacation then the refrigerator should be turned off .The food should be removed and do keep the refrigerator clean .Leave the door ajar so that air can circulate.
  • A good airflow over the tubes and pipes at the rear of the refrigerator is a must .Don't store anything inside the service door that hinders the air flow.
  • Heat rising from the condenser tubes at the top exists through the roof vent. This should be clear as the birds have been known to build nests in this area.
  • Never turn off the electricity for any length of time while there is food inside the refrigerator. The food can go bad leaving unpleasant odors.
  • Always keep the refrigerator clean, both inside and out.
  • Never use sharp objects which would damage the evaporator coils .Hence follow the manual instructions.
  • Turn the refrigerator off and unplug it before removing the food parts and the interiors .Follow the manual for cleaning the different parts of the unit.
  • Do not use abrasive powder to wash the refrigerator .Use a mild detergent and lukewarm water to clean the interior and exterior parts. Wash the plastic pan which collects the water discarded from the automatic defrosting frequently.
